Harmonization Workshop Recap

The NIEM version 3.0 schedule is under way! On September 18, the NIEM Program Management Office (PMO) hosted a 3.0 related workshop with members of the NIEM Business Architecture Committee (NBAC) and the NIEM community to kick-off the 90 day harmonization period. Harmonization is the process in which domains examine the model to ensure that a given data element exists only once and is reusable across other domains.

The workshop served the dual purpose of preparing for NIEM 3.0 harmonization activities as well as discussing how to conduct harmonization on a more consistent basis. Michelle Vidanes, the NIEM PMO’s NBAC Liaison, facilitated a series of presentations and demos covering a range of harmonization-related topics in order to educate workshop attendees.

During the workshop, participants expressed a shared mutual workshop goal of better understanding the overall harmonization process to meet upcoming 3.0 deadlines and mitigate potential issues. All participants left the workshop equipped with guidance, best practices, and lessons learned from fellow NIEM community members that have undergone harmonization before.
